How to Care for Knitwear & Natural Fiber Garments

A hand-knitted garment made from natural fibers is an investment. Treated well, it will last for years — even decades. These care guidelines will help you get the most from every OUND piece.

Washing

Always hand wash knitwear in cool or lukewarm water. Use a small amount of gentle wool wash or baby shampoo — avoid regular detergents, which are too harsh for natural fibers. Do not rub or wring the garment. Instead, gently squeeze water through the fabric, then press excess water out by rolling the garment in a clean towel.

Drying

Lay the garment flat on a clean, dry surface — a drying rack with a towel on top works well. Reshape it gently while damp. Never hang knitwear to dry: the weight of wet fiber will stretch it out of shape. Keep it away from direct sunlight and radiators, which can cause shrinkage and fading.

Storing

Fold knitwear; never hang it. Hanging causes natural fibers to stretch at the shoulders over time. Store in a breathable cotton bag or on a shelf, away from moisture. For long-term storage, add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths naturally — avoid mothballs, which use harsh chemicals.

Dealing with Pilling

Pilling is a natural feature of wool and other protein fibers. It occurs when short fibers on the surface tangle together from friction. It does not mean the garment is poor quality — in fact, pilling tends to slow down after the first few wears as surface fibers settle. Use a fabric shaver or a sweater stone to remove pills gently as needed.

Repairs

One of the benefits of hand-knitted garments is that they can be repaired. A small hole or dropped stitch can be fixed by hand using matching yarn and a darning needle. OUND can advise on repairs for pieces in our collection — reach out through our store or Instagram @_ound_.

Caring for Botanically Dyed Pieces

Botanical dyes are stable when cared for correctly. Wash in cool water — heat accelerates fading. Dry away from direct sunlight. Over time, the color will develop a soft patina. This is intentional: it is the nature of plant-based pigments, and part of what makes each OUND piece unique.
