Wool is not manufactured. It is grown.
Every wool garment begins long before it reaches our studio. It starts in the countryside, with the annual shearing of sheep - a practice that is essential for the animals' wellbeing and marks the beginning of the fibre's journey.
What follows is a series of careful processes that transform raw fleece into yarn, preserving the qualities that make wool such an extraordinary natural fibre.
1. Raw fleece
Freshly shorn wool arrives at the mill just as it comes from the sheep: rich in lanolin and carrying traces of the landscape - grass, dust and the natural elements of life in the countryside.
2. Washing & sorting
The wool is carefully sorted to select the finest fibres before being washed and carded. A first coarse comb removes remaining impurities, while a finer comb aligns the fibres into long, soft strands.
During this process, the shorter fibres are separated and later used to make felt, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
Nothing from this process is wasted. The lanolin naturally present in the wool is recovered for use in the cosmetic industry, while the water used during washing is treated and returned to the fields for irrigation.
3. From fibre to yarn
The aligned fibres are gathered into long tops and sent to the spinning mill, where they are transformed into yarn. Here, the thickness and character of the yarn are carefully defined according to the garment it will become.
At ound, we leave our wool in its natural colour, celebrating the fibre as it comes from the sheep rather than dyeing it.
4. Knitted by local artisans
Finally, the yarn reaches our knitters, who transform it into finished garments using carefully chosen stitches and techniques. What began as the fleece of a living animal becomes a sweater designed to be worn and cherished for years.
Because wool is a renewable and biodegradable fibre, every garment begins and ends with nature. Thoughtfully processed and made to last, it offers an alternative to synthetic materials and the fast pace of disposable fashion.
